The National Zoo maintains its own Police Department, the National Zoological Park Police, which consists of 50 full-time and part-time officers. The National Zoological Park Police is a an agency that has been recognized by the United States Congress. The NZPP is one of 5 original Police Agency's within the District of Columbia with full Police powers. The NZPP work very closely with the Metropolitan Police Department and the United States Park Police.

US National Zoological Park Police Officers, although under the authority of the Smithsonian Institution, do not report to the Office of Protection Services because they are specifically assigned to the 163-acre (0.66 km2) National Zoo. The National Zoo is owned and managed by the Smithsonian in the District of Columbia and is staffed 24 hours a day by full-time US National Zoological Park Police Officers. All NZPP officers are trained at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC). NZPP Officers are Federal law enforcement officers and carry full law enforcement jurisdiction within the District of Columbia and work closely with the Metropolitan Police Department and the US Park Police.
